Nokia and Microsoft - A Love Story
By Kwazzy
Prologue
Once upon a time, there was a very powerful company known as Microsoft, they dominated the PC world with their Windows products for over 20 years and nothing could stop them, even to this day, they remain top dog in the PC market. A few years down the line, a mobile company known as Nokia, was dominating the mobile phone and device market with their killer OS, known as Symbian. As the mobile phone market grew, as did Nokia, having a market worldwide and have zero competition, Nokia got a little comfortable. Windows had a mobile OS known as Windows Mobile; businessmen with no other option were using this OS and were not too particularly fond of it. When Blackberry came around, Windows Mobile and Nokia started to have some heavy competition. Very Heavy. But it really was not until Apple got into the mobile phone game, that Windows and Nokia really started to lose the mobile market. The iPhone had been released, and every consumer, had to have one, within the first year, combined, Nokia and Microsoft had lost over 60% of their share in the mobile industry. Still, Microsoft and Nokia, on their own turf, did nothing. Nokia kept grasp of Symbian, and Windows was working on their own OS to make it better, but yet again, another strong arm in the mobile industry was introduced. Google. Android was released upon the world, and with that, after two years of both Android and iOS as the reigning champs, together, Nokia and Microsoft had less than 10% of the market, less than 5% was actually in the US. February 11th, 2011, Nokia and Microsoft have announced they are joining forces in the mobile world, so they too, can become a powerhouse yet again.
An Opportunity
At the press conference which I will post at the end, Microsoft mentioned they would bring their OS to Nokia, and Nokia would provide all the devices to host Microsoft's OS, as well as their worldwide market. This is the best chance for these two companies to get back in the mix and actually hold their own; Nokia's OS Symbian, was dead, and by dead I mean outdated and over the past 3 years has been taking a nosedive in the market share. Microsoft on the other hand, had no real devices, sure HTC and Samsung would make a few phones with Windows Phone 7 as their OS, but up until this point, have not had a dedicated manufacturer. Now, with high end Nokia devices hosting Windows Phone 7 as their OS , they may actually stand a chance against the two giants, Apple and Google. Although Nokia's worldwide market had diminished over the past few years, they still have something the two giants do not have, actual STORES worldwide. My time in the service has brought me to a lot of countries, and every one, even the third world ones, have Nokia stores and affordable devices. This alliance, in my own opinion was the best decision on both sides.
Are you interested in getting a Nokia device with Windows Phone 7?

This means if you are interested, hold back from renewing your contract with you carrier. Windows and Nokia have already started porting their OS to Nokia devices, and they look quite promising. As you can see, at their conference, they showed some concept ideas as to what their phones will look like, and they are pretty sleek. Now that Microsoft finally has a pretty nice mobile OS, and they have phones that have been known as "tough as steel ", this alliance shows much potential. Only time will tell, but now the game is on, and between Nokia's and Microsoft's resources, there is no way this product will not be marketed worldwide, there is not the slightest doubt in my mind that these two companies, provided they market, market , and market , will become one of the big mobile phone companies yet again. Personally, I do not have a "favorite " mobile OS, I believe iOS, Android and Windows phones are extremely customizable and have great power. Be sure to follow me to see what happens in the tech world and let me know your thoughts! I always look for new ideas, so lets hear them ! Ive attached the video from the conference announcing the partnership as well as the concepts provided by Microsoft and Nokia.
